Isle of Wight mini golf tour 2013

Fri 20th September 2013

I first visited the Isle of Wight the summer I finished University, after spending 5 years in Southampton without ever going! That time, while we were driving around, I noticed a lot of mini golf. I like mini golf, so resolved to come back for a mini golfing tour of the island.

Puckpool Park

  • Cost: £2.50?
  • Holes: 12

First up, the tongue twisting Puckpool Park!

Lovely lions! 12 holes. Lots of debris from overhanging trees and gravel paths.

Nice course, if a bit untidy. Cafe does breakfast, hot drinks, cakes, pizzas, burgers, other main meals and beer.

Interesting rhythm game in a playground that looks like a massive spider!

Sandham Gardens

  • Cost: £3?
  • Holes: 18

Tidy and smart, but a bit lifeless. Long, smooth greens with lots of potential for the ball to keep rolling; accuracy is a must! Went round in reverse to avoid slow group who arrived just before is. 18 holes.

Pirate themed. New? At least well kept. Surfaces a bit uneven.

Smooth carpet. Nice design on early holes. Broken wood on slope gets ball stuck. Lots of leaf debrief on course. Rocks on edge have annoying bounce; wooden boards have bad bounce.

Results

Foolishly we played an even number of matches, so it resulted in a tie: Emma 33 Rikki

Total strokes: Emma 264266 Rikki

The course which took us both the highest average number of strokes was Needles Jurassic Golf. The lowest average number of strokes was at Sandown Pier Indoor Adventure Golf. This kind of aligns with how difficult and easy they both felt respectively.

My opinion is that the Puckpool Park course was the most charming, and was moderately challenging. There was also a nice cafe there. The Crazy Golf and Pirate Golf at Shanklin were both good fun, and when you’re at one it’s worth doing the other. The others, either due to dullness, bad lighting or disrepair, I could take or leave.
